A Message from the Maverick Founder

In 1985 a new volleyball club was formed and took to the road to compete in OVA events across the province. The Maverick Volleyball Club was an opportunity for east end athletes to get a higher level of volleyball competition and coaching to help them reach for their goals.

The club had an immediate impact, finishing in the OVA top 6 their first year. That success was underscored with 6 athletes being named to Provincial team rosters over the next 5 years, and over two-dozen playing in CIAU volleyball before 1994.

The Maverick name was used to signify a new way of doing things in Ottawa, and this theme was evident in the choosing of names for the teams; Mustangs, Longhorns, Posse, Colts and Gamblers appeared at OVA competitions and OCVL leagues.

After a low period (1994-98) when our teams did not play in the OVA, personal circumstances allowed for a reboot, and a new improved version of the Club took shape. Rejuvenated by the visions of former players, the club has grown to heights I could never have imagined when I started.

Now affectionately known as the "MAVS" our programs are taking many different directions. From the addition of the High Performance program for developing elite athletes, to the developmental camps, the 8-week programs for beginners, the intermediate city league, and our full competitive rosters – we have something for everyone in youth volleyball.

All of this has not caused us to become complacent. Working with several key individuals in the volleyball community, our programs match with Volleyball Canada's new Long Term Athlete Development Model in order to get the most from and for our players and coaches.

Over the past season we were one of only 3 clubs in Ontario to become first certified as Volleyball Canada Accredited Clubs. A mark of validation awarded for the broad scope of programs and services we offer.

During the 2014/5 season we will be implementing both a Master Coaching program to help improve our coaches performance in the gym and beyond. Also coaches will be earning points to ensure that all aspect of our programs are followed and delivered to the level we are looking for.

Our parent group is busy working on the Maverick Development plan to examine every aspect of the club and ensure we are doing everything we can to serve you better.

Not to be left behind in the summer, the Mavericks are the only club in the region to offer an organized beach league as well as specialized beach training programs.

As I have said many times, things around here are changing... keep an eye on us!
